Lent, 4th Sunday (A) Scattered Shadows by John Howard Griffin tells the story of a man's journey into blindness and back again. The most interesting thing was that regaining his sight required as much adjustment as becoming blind had required. He had become comfortable as a blind man.

Today's Gospel is about a man's journey into sight. Christ works a miracle and he begins to see the world, himself, and others in a new light. But today's readings are really about Spiritual Blindness. Samuel learns that God judges by the heart, not by appearances. Paul tells the early Christians to walk in the light of Christ. The best cure for spiritual blindness is Confession. It is there that we admit what we truly see, and God shows us how He truly sees us. In Confession, God works a miracle that we thought was impossible - He makes us holy. (3 Apr 2011)
