Ordinary Time, 17th Sunday. Twenty barley loaves feed 100. Five barley loaves feed 5,000. Obviously the Bible is not trying to teach us math, so what are these stories about? Barley loaves were poor food. These poor people gave generously and God used their gift to feed many. When we hoard what we have, we try to depend on our meager resources. Our own resources will never be enough. But when we give generously, we depend on God. I experienced this in my own life. So did a young couple that gave generously. Our own resources will never be enough, but with God, we have more than enough.
